URBAN WORKBOOK: WIRE DRAWING EXERCISE
For this exercise I needed to create a drawing with one continuous line from wire based on one of the urban photographs taken for Lesson 1. The subject is a stranger I found myself sitting behind on the bus by chance. An elderly gentleman, deep in private contemplation during the repetitive rhythm of travel. I was drawn to the unique figure, his posture and body language in particular.
Experimenting with different techniques, stroke weight, mediums I did a series of quick sketches attempting to capture his likeness in it’s most simple form. Settling on one illustrated outline to use as a reference, I then proceeded to create a wire sculpture. Wrestling this rather long unbroken metallic line into submission proved more di cult and frustrating than anticipated, but ultimately I was pleased with the result and I felt I did my model justice.
I then returned to the setting of my familiar bus route and placed my piece within it’s original context, an outline of a human figure alone amongst other outlines of human figures on their daily commute.
